Grandview Park, one of the finest natural preserves in the world, is home to a number of beautiful, historic attractions. The park is home to the United States' first national park and one of the country's largest national monuments. On its own, Grandview Park's contributions to the Nation's heritage are vast. In March of 2021 the Mentor Ohio Historical Society completed the renovation of what was previously known as the Garfield Historical Society Building. The new structure is known as the James A. Garfield National Historic Site and serves as the nation's first national historic site. The renovated facility will feature a new science center that will feature an exhibit on early America and a large exhibition featuring a collection of Civil War artifacts.
In addition to the science and history exhibits, the center will feature a number of interactive exhibits that provide tourists with a close-up look at some of America's most important historic places. The restoration project took more than two years and cost approximately $120 million. The most notable site to be impacted by the renovation was the former administration building, which had been torn down prior to the start of the project. However, other historic landmarks were spared from the wreck. Among these sites include the Cedar Point State Historic Park, Rock Island Penitentiary, the Cedar Point Tool Shed, Coddle House and the Rock Island Plantation.
Over five hundred years ago, travelers visiting this area would have to travel through small caves to get to the Grand Canyon. Today, there are many exciting things to see in Mentor, Ohio including a bus tour of the many historic landmarks. Those taking the bus tour will see some of the most notable landmarks in Mentor's history as well as many other interesting facts about the area. Travelers will also enjoy the spectacular views of the beautiful countryside.
The restored Cedar Point Tool Shed is among the most popular attractions in Mentor Ohio. Built in 1940, the original Tool Shed served as a summer home for miners on the nearby White River Reservation. Today, visitors can take a stroll through the renovated workshop. Many of the original artifacts can also be viewed on this two-mile long tour of the historic landmarks in Mentor.
Other fascinating activities can be found in and around Mentor's historic landmarks. Bird watching enthusiasts and nature lovers will enjoy watching butterflies, hummingbirds, orioles and other native wildlife as they feed on insects in the natural habitat. Ohio's premier amusement park is located in Mentor, so visitors can experience rides on the Sludge Pit and the Cedar Point Amphitheater.
